does any one use a compass as the main form of navigation ? i used a gps but had a compass back up. i worked for silva uk in livingston back in 2001 . i was on the production line making the multinav hand held gps. we had an issue with dust in the display . i came up with an idea and won £50 in either vouchers for a shop or £50 worth of stock from the stores at silva . i picked two of these http://www.ukge.co.uk/guides/compass/Products/Eclipse99.jpg

the sliva eclipse 99 pro . i got one for me and one for my mate . and i have never used it .still in the box. it may have a few scrapes but its not been out of the house

i did however use a http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51LFgLOlUNL._SL500_AA300_.jpg expeditine 4 as my back up to the gps

i also have this http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:...YyZ2i7-22aYtyEptvrDU676-lyG4p2zhjrn3a_wpk1aaQ a silva military prismatic mark iv . its the all brass one . only problem is that its a few degrees out . i got it when silva close the factory in livingston. i also gat a orienteering one too but its missing a strap that goes over your thumb
(sorry about the change of font .pushed the wrong button )

I used to use this one years ago, it's oil damped not sure of the make though. I don't do a lot of map reading these days as I always seem to know where I'm going but I do carry it around at work just in case I need to know which way a garden is pointing so I plant the right things in the right places. Again, I know all my gardens so well now it rarely sees the light of day and if I want to know which way I'm pointing I do it either by the sun or stars.

Not sure how accurate this compass is now, not sure how to check:eek:
